At precisely 1100 hours on the 21st July 2007 HMAS Albany started the five yachts on the restart of this classic blue water race.

Wayne Huxley’s 15 metre Schionning catamaran had vowed to shatter the 52 hour and 20 minute race record established by John Punch’s Zuma in the nineties but instead his Screecher disintegrated into the Banda Sea and he had to settle for line honours instead.

The other yachts, Mike Butler’s Kishka another 13.5 metre Schionning, Michael O.Keefe’s Jasmin, a Savage 12.2, Garry Clayden’s Enigma an Adam’s 11.2, Jim Grierson’s Lothlorien an Adam’s 12.5 all sailed into Ambon after a “very exciting trip”.

They were “overwhelmed” with hospitality (see the photo gallery links above) and all pledged to be at the start line for the 2008 race.

Cruise Missile won the duel honours in the inaugural DBCYA Darwin to Ambon Yacht Race Multihull division.

Kishka was second in the multi hull division. Enigma was first across the line in the mono hull division and also took out first place on handicap. Lothlorien was second, Jasmin third.

The yachts enjoyed champagne sailing conditions with consistent 15 to 25 knot winds with seas from 2 to 4 metres.

The yacht race has been a great success with the co-operation of the Indonesian Government, especially the Governing body of Officials in Ambon,  and the Northern Territory Government supporting the race with sponsorship.

The Dinah Beach Cruising Yacht Association wishes to thank the Governments of Indonesia and the Northern Territory for helping to resurrect one of the truly great blue water races.
