Home Port:

Why are you entering the Darwin to Ambon Yacht Race & Rally?
Because I love sailing to Indonesia and have enjoyed all the races I have done when I lived in Darwin.

Have you been to Indonesia before?
Heaps of times – about 12 Ambon races since 1982 when my yacht WHIM-O-WAY came second in the Cruising Division, the Indonesian navy chartered yacht ELECTRIC LAMB beat us.

How many crew do you have?
Two plus myself.  Judy O’Donoghue and Mark Clancy both from Bundaberg.

Have you sailed together before?   Have you ever raced together before?
Sailed yes – raced no.

Are any of your crew new to sailing?
Judy has sailed the world with her late husband and Mark has done some coastal sailing but not overseas.

How would you describe your boat, racer, cruiser or live-aboard home?
It has a good racing history.  In 1937 it won the Trans-Tasman and held the record for 12 years.  It has also done a lot of Whitsunday rallies over the past 17 years. She won Hamilton Island in 1984.  I’ve only had the boat about a year and this will be my first major race on her.

How are your watches structured?
Not too sure yet but basically one on watch at all times.  I enjoy the tiller steering and will sit up hours at a time.  I particularly enjoy night watches.

What do you have in the pantry?
As little as possible as we hope to be in Ambon in 2-3 days and then will eat well.

What do you have for treats for when you become becalmed, or after a big squall?
Rum, rum and more rum.

What is your next port of call after Ambon?
The Spice Islands (Banda Naira) then have to head back to Darwin.

Shady Lady Skipper Peter Charles recieved 3rd on Handicap Racing Cruising Monohull Division. The award was presented by the Head of Tourism Office of the Maluku Province, Ibu Florence. The prize includes $300.
